Ahhh…one of my favorite things – FOOD. And summer has the best of it.
My favorite summer memories involve food. I’m Southern and we kinda revolve around the next feast
First thing that comes to mind is watermelon. Icy cold and sweet is how I prefer it. I can taste it now. In fact, my mouth is watering.
And round here, the peaches are pretty good come June. Not to mention those big tomatoes hanging heavy from the vine, sun ripened and ready to slap on a big grilled hamburger. Hmm…let’s see, we can’t forget about the grilled corn on the cob. Grab the butter and dental floss.
And then there are snow cones – or as they call them in New Orleans – Snow Balls. Oh, yummy. The best in New Orleans are found on Plum Street and they come in little chinese takeout boxes.
Then there are other icy treats like my all time favorite – Margueritas. Nothing like sipping them by the pool while the chicken and steak kabobs are grilling. I like to make my own (recipe given to me by our dental school friend Jacob Gauthier – I’ve got to give him props.) Here’s the recipe for the best ones I’ve made:
Fill the blender with ice (but not too full), add marguerita mixer and fill till half mark; the next half should be filled with equal parts of the following: tequila, triple sec, and sweet and sour mix. Blend till smooth and garnish with salt and enjoy.
And my absolute favorite summer food – blackberry cobbler!!!
I have fond memories of my dad and me scouting out dewberry and blackberry patches. Then we’d spray our legs with bug spray, put on our old clothes and head out to pick gallon after gallon of berries. Oh, man, the way they tasted bursting with juice and warmed by the sun. If we could get enough, Moma made blackberry cobbler. Pair that with Bluebell Homemade vanilla ice cream and you’ve got heaven. I’m not kidding.
So, I know, you’re hungry for summer. Thank goodness it’s here, huh? So I’ve told you my favorites – What’s your favorite summer food? Got any good recipes to share for summer favorites?

I’m hungry now. Heehee. I told you about the homemade ice cream yesterday, but hotdogs on the grill, just slightly burnt. Yum yum. And S’mores. I know you don’t think about fire during the hot summer months, but really when isn’t it a great time for S’mores.
Oh, and you can add some fresh watermelon to the Margarita mix and it’s great.
LOL. am laughing because I’m a total blackberry cobbler nut. In fact, I’ve a story with a whole 10pgs written that centers around baking a blackberry clobber. They grew wild in a couple spots around the farm. Me, cousin, and step-sister would all head out and get to picking. 2cups for one cobbler. It would take us nearly all afternoon, but we’d find them sooner or later.
Makes me want to plant bushes next year. I hear they’re basically a plant and forget type. Hmm…maybe to up the realness of my story, I should be planting blackberries. After all, I’ve got a lot of cobbler to be making to find a winner!
Vicki, I have never eaten a S’more. Always wanted one, but never had one. Those aren’t the kind of staples I keep in my kitchen.
What, no smores? Go get some the next time you burn brush around the farm. The kid will love ‘em.
Oh, and watermelon in the marguerita? I am so trying that next time. I have tried fresh blueberries before. They were good too.
And, I am not surprised we have that in common, Keri. Sometimes I wonder if we were seperated at birth. But then I remember that I am older than you. Bummer.
Cherries!! Cherry dishes of all kinds. Cherry pie to be exact. Oh, I can feel a day in the kitchen coming on…..
Hugs,
~Caroline
Favorite summer foods…..hmmmm anything that can be grilled. Burgers, hot dogs, chicken, corn, steaks….um I’m sure you get the picture.
Watermelon and Popsicles too. I don’t do s’mores. I have a thing against marshmallows. Never fear though my kids love them so I make them for em.
I love ribs, corn on the cob, potato salad and fresh fruit salad.
Here’s a recipe for LEMONADE PIE. It’s perfect for summer.
6 oz. (or more) frozen lemonade concentrate – thawed
1 can Eagle Brand low-fat milk
12 oz. low-fat Cool Whip
2 regular size graham cracker crusts
Mix milk and lemonade together. Fold in Cool Whip. Spoon into pie shells. Sprinkle top with graham cracker crumbs or vanilla wafer crumbs if desired. Refrigerate.
Jeez, I’ve been hungry for these foods all day long. Too bad my day was so busy that I couldn’t make time to heat up the grill and indulge.
I love all those things – I forgot about cherries. I love those just as they are. Don’t even need to put them in anything.
And that lemonade pie; I forgot how good that is. I make it the same way except I use the Crystal Light drink mix tub (Powdered kind) Didn’t know you could use the frozen stuff.
Thanks for that recipe.
Lots of good stuff here! My favorite is anything COLD and refreshing during the hot months.
