Turkey Traditions

turkeyIt’s Thanksgiving week here in the USA! Yeah! I love, love, LOVE, this holiday. Great dessert. Great Turkey, and even better, one of the few times a year I get Grandma’s Dressing and my cousin’s Sweet Potatoes. YUM, YUM, YUMMY.

I’ve got a fun filled few days of turkey talk (as you can see in the Meet Me Here section). Traditions are up today. For as long as I can remember, we all gathered at Grandma’s house around twelve to one o’clock to begin the actual sit down dinner. I didn’t say eating, because we all snack on the food being cooked throughout the morning.

For years before I got married, I would often spend the night with Grandma and help her get dinner ready. I know what some of you are thinking, what skill could a 10 year old provide with dinner? Quite a lot, thankyouverymuch. I could open cans, cut the cranberry sauce (best stuff ever straight from the can), did a lot of stirring this and that, along with some mixing, and most importantly, setting the table. Table setting was a big job. Grandma has a big table and we pulled out all the stops.

As the meal fixing pulled to a close, it was then time to ready desserts before dinner. This was when I learned to make Grandma’s Chocolate Pie and got my first lessons in meringue. And then I also had to set the dessert table. And somewhere during all that, help make the salad. Macy’s parade always blasted in the background and we’d stop and pause when some of the performances were going or when Snoopy would go over.

Thanksgiving always showed what a big family we’ve got, but now it’s gotten unimaginably bigger. All use grandkids have had kids, so we’ve really padded the place out and squeezed in all the chairs we’re going to get around that table. I’m thinking there’ll be about 28 of us there. 8 will be six and under! Good times will be had I’m sure.

Then that evening, we flock to my other Grandma’s house were we mostly take part in eating a little ham andpig lots of desserts. She’ll typically do cherry cheesecake and sometimes a pumpkin pie.

But since I’ve gotten married, there’s more! Often times the husband’s family will be pushed in between my Grandma #1 and Grandma #2 stops. But this year we’re catching a bit of break. Hubby’s family has planned theirs for Wednesday night.

What’s your Thanksgiving routine like? Any traditions that’s been started up? Got people like me who you know are bringing what?
