Waiting on You by Kristan Higgins

I received a free copy of this book in return for this promotion. And I read it. Immediately. As I do all of Kristan’s books. Read on and you’ll see why. K L Dell

WaitingOnYou_BookCoverWAITING ON YOU is a hilarious take on what happens when love leaves you with some unfinished business. Lucas Campbell was Colleen O’Rourke’s first love. She thought they’d end up together right up until the moment he told her he was engaged to someone else. So when Lucas shows up in town for a family emergency ten years later, Colleen isn’t interested in getting involved. But it turns out that Lucas might not be the only one who deserves a second chance.

People magazine says that Kristan’s books are filled with “strong storytelling and a refreshing, sarcastic wit” and calls them “thoroughly entertaining.” WAITING ON YOU is all of this and more.

Review:

I’m going to come right out and say, the leads in this book were harder to like than most of Kristan’s characters. But I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way. These people have layers, and it takes time to get to know them, but as with real life those are usually the ones with the most fascinating stories.

Both Colleen and Lucas have flaws. Big ones. And they’ve made mistakes. Huge.  Mistakes that left them both bleeding. They continue making mistakes throughout this book, but it is because they are flawed and ultimately more human for it that I stuck around to see them through to the end.

On the surface, these are two cookie cutter romantic leads, but Higgins continues to scratch away at their surfaces until we see what’s deep underneath. Not the most accessible of all the books she’s written, but worth the effort, I thought. I especially enjoyed the unexpected twist of the wicked stepmother trope toward the end.

Leave a comment below, and I’ll draw for a copy of the book on Friday, so you can see for yourself whether you agree.
