Suicide Race

Happy Independence Day, America!

Fireworks and Rodeos, Sparklers and BBQs. What a fun celebration every year. For rodeo cowboys and cowgirls the Fourth is called Cowboy Christmas because of all the money won.

But instead of talking about rodeos, I’d like to tell you all about a special event at a rodeo near me.

Vale, Oregon is a small town near where I live and over the Fourth of July weekend it rocks one of the best rodeos in the Northwest. The rodeo itself is over one hundred years old and has an event only a few select rodeos have, the Suicide Race.

This year’s suicide race it takes 20 minutes for the riders to reach the top of the hill and only about 2 minuets to get down.

The race is about 1 mile long and includes several steep drops, crossing a road and a river and finishing in the Rodeo arena.

The riders and horses travel to the few other suicide races around the Northwest to compete. The riders are fearless and the horses athletic and very surefooted.

Do you have any special events at the celebrations near you? What plans do you have for Independence Day?
