I wasn’t sure I would be able to post anything here today. My internet has been down for three days and I was beginning to despair that it would ever be fixed! But it got me thinking about The Internet and how dependent I have become on it.
My husband’s grandmother was 98 when she passed last year. We use to talk about all the changes she had seen in her life–television, radio, cars, jets, private telephone lines–the list goes on and on. I have to admit there have been some pretty amazing changes in my lifetime also, but if you were to ask me what I think the greatest invention of my time is I would have to say the Internet. Because of the Internet, I have friends in countries I will never visit and have conversations with them in real time for free! If I need information I just have to type a few key words into a search engine and with one click of the mouse I have over 5 thousand sites to look at! Instead of carrying a paperback book with me I now carry my electronic reader which houses an entire library of books! Whenever I need a new one I just go to the Internet, find what I want, and with a click I can download it instantaneously. No more waiting on the mail to deliver it! How’s that for instant gratification?
How often have your kids asked you a question and you tell them to go look it up on the Internet? Right?! We even have the ability to carry it with us wherever we go. Back in the days where computers took up entire rooms no one would have thought that in the year 2013 we would have these tiny things called “smart phones” that are basically hand-held computers.
So I was pretty frustrated these past few days and I was getting a little stressed about getting my blog out–I mean, have you ever tried to type a blog on your smart phone? Yeah–not much fun! But finally I got a text that the Internet in our area was back up and I jumped on my computer like a long-lost lover… Yes, I know–its a sickness, but I know I am not alone here! How many of you can live without your computer/smart phone/internet? And if so, how long can you go before you break down and go find WiFi at Starbucks?!
