I just met my half-sister, her family and my cousin and his daughter and granddaughter for the first time. Wow! I really don’t have the words to describe how incredible it was to put my arms around my little sister for the first time.
I know I didn’t want to have high expectations. You watch enough TV you know that not every family being united is an Oprah moment. Many are more the Jerry Springer types and it all goes bad. But for me, it was Oprah with rainbows and unicorns and butterflies! My nieces are beautiful and sweet, my little nephew is absolutely adorable, and my cousin and his daughter and grand baby were wonderful also!
I have spent the better part of 30 years “creating” a family for myself. My husband and I have taken in all the kids of friends, and sometimes the friends themselves, and have made a family that we love and accept as our own. It probably wouldn’t work for everyone, but it works for us. After meeting my sister I can see that they will fit into this family I have made very well!
The girls and I are heading over to my sister’s hotel in a bit to visit some more with them. The cousins want my girls to come swimming with them–the concept of a heated swimming pool has them all excited! They are really enjoying their trip to California! So while they swim my sister and I can visit and do some more bonding while they are here. They leave tomorrow to visit other relatives before they head home to Washington, but they are planning a longer trip out here in June. I can’t wait!
Family. It is what you make it, and I am pretty sure I like mine!! Anyone else have a “created” family? I guess when our children marry we begin to re-create the family we know. How has that worked for you? Who’s got funny stories about merging families? I’m sure I will have some to tell soon!
