I was pondering what to write about, when I remembered The Author Chronicles, ‘Top Thursday Picks’ in my inbox.
They mentioned Dear Teen Me, a website where authors have posted letters they wrote to their teen selves. Hours of fascinating reading there.
But it made me think — if I really could write a letter to my teen self, what would I tell her? Aside from NOT buying those purple, crushed velvet, hip-hugger, monster bell bottoms, of course.
Would I warn her of the mistakes ahead, so she could avoid them? Maybe just the catastrophic ones? Would I warn her that her sister and best friend would die before 30? That she’d marry *gulp* 3 times?
Here’s the letter I eventually wrote:
Believe in yourself; you are amazing, just the way you are.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. If you can’t control it, forget it and focus on what you can.
Pay attention to what you enjoy – it does matter.
You are not alone.
You will find a wonderful man – eventually.
Follow your heart; it’ll lead you to more amazing places than you can imagine.
Enjoy the ride – it goes too fast!
P.S. – don’t buy the purple bell-bottoms. Just. Don’t.
So it’s your turn. What would you tell your teen self?
