Liz Talley is a THIEF! A THIEF I tell ya!
Okay, ‘thief’ may be a strong word, but we had that whole discussion about catchy titles and all that between the Romancers here, so that’s really what that’s about. I could have gone with the case of Keri’s missing things or something.
Our Liz is more like an accidental lifter who takes care of the things she accumulates. Let me start from the beginning. I give you, my silverware set:
Big and nice, yes? I think so too. Yay wedding gift! See this spoon from the set?
Lovely little slotted fella. For a while now when I need a big spoon to serve with, I reach for my silverware and this slotted guy is all I ever come out with. For months I have been confused. Why does my set have a slotted spoon but it didn’t come with a regular spoon? How am I supposed to serve gravy without a big spoon? So for a long time now, I’ve been using my big soup scooper spoon to serve things like gravy. Yes, yes, I know. I can hear you. “Go buy a FREAKING spoon already, Keri.”
I don’t think about it beyond the 2.5 seconds it takes for me to pull out the slotted guy and put it back. If even that long. A new spoon has never made it on my shopping list, let alone my mind at the store. And can you even buy a single big spoon or would I have to get a whole set? Anyway, I’ve just delt with and lived on.
Then I returned to my local RWA’s chapter conference in March a few weeks ago. I roomed with my usual roomie—the lovely Liz Talley. As part of the conference, members always bring food dishes to serve on Friday night.
You see where I’m going with this, don’t you?
Sunday morning, it’s time to pack up and go and Liz asks if these are my dishes in the bathroom. I tell her the two bowls and the slotted spoon (that I had to take for my fruit salad because my regular spoon does not exist! I wanted to make sure I at least came home with the one treasure I had).
So Liz walked out of the bathroom with two spoons, looking a little confused and asked if I’m sure. Cause they look from the same set. See picture:
See? Same.
Liz admitted she doesn’t know where this other spoon came from. She’s had it and it doesn’t match her set. Me, OMG! I’ve been wondering forever why my set doesn’t have a regular spoon!
We had some laughs. And I happily returned home with my dearly needed spoon.
And that’s how Liz Talley is sort of kind of, not really even close to a thief, but I was able to make a catchy title!

My mother is constantly accusing me of stealing her brownie pan. Now, I’ll admit that my pan looks just like hers, and hers has gone missing. But I’m pretty sure I remember buying mine … or at least I think I did. Now she sighs and tells daddy that she can’t fix brownies because I have her pan.
Maybe it’s a writer thing because we’ve always got our heads in the clouds?

LOL. next holiday or birthday–buy her a new one! I borrow a lot of my mom’s stuff, so if she’s missing something and I have one that looks like it, I don’t even question myself. hazards of her living next door. If I need it, I just go get it.

You mean, you make and serve gravy?
REAL gravy?
I bet you mash your potatoes, too.
*shaking my head*
Mar 13, 2013 @ 09:27:48
yes! real gravy. made from fat and flour and salt. I also just found out my cholesterol is a little high…but I only make gravy about once a month. so, I’m sure it’s not contributing too much.
sadly, I don’t make mashed potatoes at all unless I have a sore throat (I do mash them when I do too!)husband and kid won’t eat them.

I lose stuff like that spoon all the time!
Poor Liz. Sounds unjustly accused!
Hey! At least she gave your spoon a good home for the past year.
Mar 13, 2013 @ 10:05:35
She did give it a good home!
I can be particular about my dishes and so forth, but important papers (things that actually matter), forget about it.

Cooking – sigh. I remember when I used to be able to do that. I have a turkey in the freezer that calls to me, every time I open the door to get ANOTHER TV dinner. Hard to cook from a wheelchair.
Are you feeling sorry for me yet? I’m feeling sorry enough for myself for all of us. Grrrr.
WHEN I can cook again, I’m pulling out that danged turkey, and yes, real mashed potatoes and gravy will be created!
Glad you’re no longer spoon challenged, Keri!
Mar 13, 2013 @ 10:06:12
aw, you’ll be there before you know it. and yes, if you’re cooking a turkey, real mashed potatoes and gravy are a MUST!

Hmm…I’m scheduled to room with her at RWA National. Thanks for the heads up to keep an eye on her!
I lost a BIG Corningware casserole dish when we rented our house for a few months to a friend of our during my hubby’s temporary assignment in Atlanta years ago. Whenever I cook a big casserole, I still grit my teeth and miss it.
Mar 13, 2013 @ 10:09:29
LOL! she will take mighty fine care of it if she ends up with something!
and oh no! that sounds like something intentional…not accidental. >:[ I use a specific pan or item for certain things I cook and would notice if it was missing right off the bat.
…like one of my pyrex dishes. I know where that one is but it’s been “reclaimed”. *crabby face*

I love it. What a close- knit friendship you two must have! And the laughs and the fun…But wow did that headline make me look twice, Keri, so good job! And I’m pleased that you got your silverware back. I hate it when something I reall depend upon goes missing and I have no idea where it is. In my case it’s my eyebrow tweezers. I’m very persnickety about that — I don’t want to share my tweezers. Great post!

Thanks Donnell! Great thing with Liz is that we don’t see each other often, but we settle right into gossip and writing when we’re together. love it!

I bought a cute little gravy thingy (Is it a bowl if it’s shaped kinda like a pitcher and has a pour spout?) Miniature gravy boat. That’s it. Yup, I haven’t finished that now-cold cup of coffee yet. I pour my gravy in that and serve it. I don’t really like gravy so I never made it until I got married. I was kinda shocked how easy it is. I also have a tiny pitcher for my syrup because my husband likes it hot!
Big serving spoons are sadly absent from my drawer. So ‘fess up. Do any of you have them?
Mar 14, 2013 @ 11:04:37
I have a gravy boat in my wedding china! my wedding china is sadly packed away in the box still until I have a bigger house and a cabinet to put it in.
When I make gravy tho, it’s usually for biscuits and really thick. not sure how well it would pour.
Mar 13, 2013 @ 19:13:12
Fun, Keri. I have a couple serving spoons, but none of them ever seem to be the right size, nor are they nice enough for fancy events or guests really. Not that I attend/have either very often.
And I lost my favorite “spaghetti-getter” at an FCPD luncheon at Christmas. Completely forgot about it because I was so worried about remembering my bowl. Had to go buy a new one, but it took me months to remember to put it on the shopping list.

I do that too. My name is on that spaghetti-getter, but no one ever called to let me know…
Mar 13, 2013 @ 19:44:01
Awesome post, Keri, and brava on the catchy title! LOL It definitely caught my attention.
Laura, you have my full sympathy! I hope you can make that turkey soon, and in the meantime, make someone else cook for you!
My inlaws accidentally took the wrong muffin pan home, and left a newer, nonstick pan here. They said to keep it. I’m now suspicious of its quality.

How did I miss this post???
Oh, yeah, I’ve been in revision hell. Oh, I meant revision wonderland.
I’m glad I found your spoon. It is a most excellent spoon – I’ve used it all year. But will someone tell me where my wine opener went. I took that to NOLA conference 3 years ago and it still hasn’t surfaced. Wonder who’s using it?
