Why dogs are like writing
My kids once argued that they could never be bored if they had a dog. You can probably guess how that worked out. But I feel the same way about writing. I can never be bored when I have a story to work on.
Writing’s been keeping me engaged for four years now. In fact, this is the longest I’ve held one job, um, ever. Even for a military spouse, my resume is long and, well, long.
I’m not lazy. I just crave constant mental challenge. Once I master my work I’m ready to move on, but writing is the one thing I can never fully master. Even if I were flawless in all aspects of craft—oh, if only!—there would always be a new story to challenge me, new plot points and characters to work through, research to be done.
Writing has held my attention over the last four years, and each year has had a different focus or feel to it. That keeps it interesting.
2009 was all about the joy of writing, happiness at finally finding something to keep my brain engaged, and getting to know other writers. I started learning how the industry worked, and began to see that it was changing rapidly.
2010 was the year of craft. I read as many books, blogs, and articles as I could get my hands on. I took online classes, attended my chapter meetings, worked with a critique partner, and entered contests. I attended my first national conference and volunteered at the national level.
2011 was the year I hit my stride as a writer. I got the Golden Heart nod and placed well in several contests, and I started getting requests for my full manuscript, rejections with feedback (including one revise-and-resubmit from an agent), and requests for my future work.
2012 was the year I planned to immerse myself in my writing and really polish it up. I thought I might be getting close to publishable—I even received a revise-and-resubmit from an editor—but then something unexpected happened. Instead of selling a romantic suspense manuscript, I got a contract for, wrote, and revised Scrivener For Dummies. It went from an outline to the bookstore shelf in about six months. To be honest, I’m still kind of reeling.
2013 is the year I get back to writing romance. And now that I have all that craft swimming in my head, and know (better, anyway) how to layer it in during the revision process, I’m focusing on finding the joy in writing again.
Maybe this won’t be the Year of the Contract. But that’s okay, too. (While I wait, I might even strike out on my own and self-publish. Who knows?)
People who’ve never written before wonder how I can stand to wait four, five, six, or eleven years to get published in romance. Sure, the anxiety and impatience are there, but the longer I’m in this game, the more I realize how ill-prepared I was in the early years, and how much more I still need to learn.
I have to believe that persistence will pay off. So, until I get the call, I’ll be joyfully working on my future backlist.
Besides, I have a dog, so I can never be bored.

What an adorable post! And you nailed it. Writing is one thing you can never master. How many sentences do we write where we stress over the words and think ‘I can make this better’ I just stressed over this sentence — should that I be a we? I’m glad you love writing, Gwen. You’ve made such a dynamic impact since you’ve come on the scene.

Thanks, Donnell! I agonize over everything I write: emails, blog posts, comments, tweets. And I still find typos or things I don’t like later. So annoying. But I never get tired of the challenge.

I once had a boss tell me that “my problem” was that once I got a job down pat, I was ready for a new challenge. Looking back at all my jobs over the years, he was so right. When the job became routine, I started polishing the resume. Writing is different. Each book is a challenge. Each one has something unique or different. Writing is frustrating but never boring!
Great post, Gwen

Thanks, Cyndi. I’m glad I’m not the only one! I once spent months automating the boring parts of a job I had. That was fun, but when I was done, I had hardly anything left to do!
My job as a manufacturing engineer was the best because it was very projected oriented, so I was always working on something new. But the hours seriously interfered with my family life at a time when my kids needed me more than ever. And quitting that one worked out because I got bored at home and started writing.

Gwen I just got back from the vet and loved reading this! I just handed out 4 cow paws to my four siberian huskies, thinking “that’ll keep them busy!” I need them occupied, so I can submit my Debut Dagger entry today” How’s that working out, you may ask… I think you can guess… LOL Now everyone is trying to steal the other’s cow paw -except Miss Piggy, she’s settled down to work -my fat missy inspiration!

Wow, Cristine, four huskies!! Those are some energetic dogs. We used to have a malamute. Cute, but feisty and stubborn.
Good luck getting your submission done!

I did it! And managed to finish in time for the 90 minute drive to CRW meeting in Charlotte. But, my neglect did not go unnoticed, when I returned home, after another 90 minute drive, actually longer since I missed my exit… sigh! The youngest of my brood jumped up when I bent over to hug him and he scratched my face from hairline to chin! just missed my eye! I look like a toddler swiped me with a red marker! LOL

Oh no, but glad you got it done. 90 minutes is quite a drive! I used to have to go about that far when we were in Alabama, so the 45-60 minute drive I have now for chapter meetings seems tame in comparison.

LOL, yes -at least it’s only once a month! Not as bad as when I drove from south of the beltway in Northern VA to NIH in Bethesda daily for years… ranged from 40 minutes to 2 hours and no reason for variation LOL

At first, I was a little surprised you’d only been doing this four years! I feel like you’ve been part of the romance world for much longer. But then, I realized, you just *mastered* being a part of the romance world early on.
You seem poised to launch now! I’ll be eagerly awaiting the announcements.

Aw, thanks, Natalie. I really dove in my first year because I was excited to meet others who wrote, and wrote romance! But don’t tell me I’ve mastered it. That’s the death knell.

Don’t worry, there are tons of different elements to master, not just being part of the writing world, and the writing itself will never be mastered! So you’re good!
