Summer Fun

Snow cones, hot dogs, barbeques, and picnics. Swimming, water skiing, hanging out at the lake or beach and camping. Summer is a time for our family to spend together making wonderful lasting memories we hope to someday share with future generations.

Last year we took a trip to IMG_1437Destin, Florida and stayed in our RV at a park right on the beach. Our site was amazing. The pool was so close we could sit outside our camper under the canopy and watch the kids splash around. There was even a pond for fishing right behind us, which my 9-year-old son took full advantage of. Throw in the perfect weather and great shopping right down the road in Pensacola and we couldn’t ask for a better vacation.

This year we will be staying closer to home. Texas has lots of wonderful areas for us to explore as well. We still have a few weeks before school lets out on June 4, but I can already feel the stress from the school year and hectic schedules draining from our lives. Yeah, I get to sleep late. Well at least until 7:30. LOL Sure beats the 5:00 routine I’ve been on for the past nine months.

My goals for the next few months are to make a dent in my endless reading piles and finish a current WIP. For some reason, I find I’m more productive during the summer. Doesn’t make a lot of sense with the kids home, but I focus better and stay on track. It might have to do with all the free time I find while waiting for their tennis camps to finish or just hanging out at the neighborhood pool while they entertain themselves. I guess there’s not as much running back and forth between different activities. You really don’t stop to think about the amount of time spent in your car. At least I don’t. Whatever magic is at work during these months, I’ll welcome with my pencil in hand or fingers posed over my laptop keys. :)  Summer, hereremember-memorial-day I come!

And please don’t forget today is Memorial Day. It’s not the official start of summer on the calendar, but in my opinion it should be. Most people get together with friends and family to laugh and enjoy the warmer weather after being cooped up over the cooler months. I’m hoping that sometime during the day everyone will stop and remember those brave men and women who died serving our great country to protect the freedoms that allow us to celebrate. :)

What makes summer special for you?     Have any favorite vacations you’d like to share?  Does summer slow you down or give you an extra boost of creativity.

  1. Your time in Destin sounds like it was wonderful! I hope ya’ll have just as much fun this year.

Summer is my favorite time of year (I’m so going to love this week). The heat, the sun, the outdoors, the smell of fresh cut grass in the evenings, and of course, the grilling.

Favorite part of summer is getting to wind down and take things easy. To quote an episodes of Phineas and Ferb, “It’s like everything in nature is saying ahhh.”

  2. What makes summer special to me are the memories I had of them as a little girl. Playing badminton in the front yard… eating watermelon until my stomach ached…catching lightning bugs in a Mason jar…

Both of my parents are gone now but I’ll always treasure those summer days because it meant we were together and there was laughter and hugs…

I wish I could catch summer in a Mason jar like I did those lightning bugs.

  3. I can hear it too, Keri! Yeah for nature! :) I wish we could start the winding down today! LOL

  4. Hey, Sonya! We still play badminton with the kids. They love it. Probably because of the funny picture their parents make trying to return those crazy birdies! LOL And I remember catching those lightning bugs too! So much fun!! We don’t see many of them around here. My kids have no idea what they are missing out on!

  5. Happy Memorial Day. I love how there’s still light out when it’s nine p.m. I definitely feel more energized in the summer.

  6. Summer has always been a special time for me because as a teacher I had summers off. I looked forward to summer as much as the students did! Now that I am retired, I still love summer…except for the heat and humidity! ;-)

    Happy Memorial Day!!!

  7. OMG, I so love Destin. My family lives there and when I visit I never want to leave. The beaches are amazing and I love the places to eat and just hang out. AJ’s is fun and must do always.

Summer doesn’t slow down for me, but I do enjoy it bunches. We find time to walk on the beach or sit and watch the sunset. Going out to eat at places on the beach is a fav. Not that we’ll be doing much of that this summer. House and all.

My vacation this summer will be RWA nationals, which is tons of fun, but not really a vacation. We’re planning a cruise next year.

  8. Oh, Melissa, what memories! For several years, we went down to Fort Walton Beach with my sister and her family. The sand along there is absolutely amazing, isn’t it? We grew up in Hawaii, and that sand along the Gulf coast there is the closest to what I remember.

Hmmm. Humming quietly to myself. A lot of happy memories . . .

  9. Jane, I forgot about it staying light longer! No wonder I get so much done!! LOL

  10. Wish we had family to visit in Destin. I’d be making that trip often! The beaches are amazing. Nothing like the ones you find here in Texas.

I’ve never been on a cruise, Vicki. That sounds really fun!

  11. Wow, Beppie! Growing up in Hawaii must have been so cool!! We visited before we had kids and I would love to go back someday. Stay a month or two. LOL That’s not gonna happen. :) But it’s a fun dream!

  12. I always loved summer as a kid and teenager. This meant going to the lake, water-tubing, riding fast in the ski boat, having cookouts, and staying at my family’s camp. It was always such fun. Now that I am grown, I spend my time doing much different things. My creativity seems to kick in a lot more.
