Thanks so much to Cynthia and Everybody Needs a Little Romance for having me here! I love doing guest spots on Halloween—so many fun topics to choose from. But instead of chatting about ghosts or goblins today, I want to talk about grannies.
Nancy Naigle and I are tickled to death that our co-writing project, In For a Penny (book one in The Granny Series), will be out Tuesday, November, 5. In this first story, readers will be introduced to our band of trouble-making grannies:
Just like Dirty Harry…
only over 50, female and from the South
So I want to give ENALR readers a little insight into these “mature gals” by having them tell you about their favorite Halloween costumes and candy.
In For a Penny starts with Lillian Summer Fairview. Her husband up and died on her, leaving her nothing but trash bags full of losing scratcher lottery tickets. Now, her creative solution to her money problems has landed her sweet Southern hind-parts in one hot mess.
This year’s Halloween costume: Uncomfortably realistic inmate uniform
Favorite treat: Old-fashioned popcorn balls made with Karo syrup
Secret holiday costume fantasy: Biker chick
Handygal Maggie Rawls is Lil’s BFF from their days at William & Mary. Recently widowed, Maggie moves to Summer Haven to keep Lil company and help her look after Summer Haven, the family estate.
This year’s Halloween costume: Bob the Builder
Favorite treat: If she has to pick only one, it’s a Mr. Goodbar
Secret holiday costume fantasy: Dallas Cowboys cheerleader
When Californian Serendipity Johnson shows up at the local Wal-Mart in her VW Camper Van, Sheriff Castro has three choices—shoo her out of Summer Shoals, arrest her for boondocking, or take her to Summer Haven.
This year’s Halloween costume: Ariel from Little Mermaid
Favorite treat: She said no candy for her, but when pushed she admitted to a Mike & Ike’s weakness
Secret holiday costume fantasy: Ninja
Abby Ruth Cady is Texas to the tips of her custom cowboy boots. When Teague Castro asks her to come to come to Georgia to spy on a group of blue-hairs as some fancy-schmancy estate, Abby Ruth heads out to help. But she quickly finds that tagging along with these gals is way more fun than tattling on them and joins them in the search for a double-crossing funeral director.
This year’s Halloween costume: Annie Oakley
Favorite treat: Red Hots
Secret holiday costume fantasy: Playboy bunny
The grannies and I would love to hear about your secret holiday costume fantasy in the comments!
Honey, these are not your momma’s grannies…
When Lillian Summer Fairview’s husband up and dies on her, it leaves the last living member of the most prestigious family in Summer Shoals, Georgia, in a hot mess. While Lil was busy being a proper Southern lady, Harlan squandered dang near the whole family fortune on lottery tickets. To keep her financial skeletons in the closet and give him a decent burial, Lil made a deal that has now landed her in prison.
Desperate to keep her troubles a secret and the family estate from falling down while she pays her debt to society, Lil entrusts Summer Haven’s care to her best friend, Maggie, who recruits two more over-fifty ladies to live at Summer Haven and help keep it afloat.
But when Maggie discovers that Lil’s restitution is ten times the amount she “borrowed” from the federal government, she’s convinced Lil has taken the fall for someone else’s crime. And these gals will use every trick in their little-old-lady bags to prove it.
